No longer the new kid

By Ashourina Slewo If you had asked me during my last semester at Wayne State where I thought I would end up after graduation, I would not have an answer for you. I have great passion for journalism, but for a 20-something fresh out of college, you are usually met with rejection or unpaid internships and to a certain extent, even passion is not enough. That’s where I was. That is until I got a very brief email from my professor asking me if I would be interested in writing for The Chaldean News. […]

Don’t Hijack the Reporter’s Story

I get it. It’s your story and perhaps you even pitched it but don’t try to take over what the reporter is writing. I realize the importance of controlling your message. I consult clients on this all the time.  It can be done without irritating the reporter doing the story. This is most important when a media outlet reaches out to you. If someone calls to use you in the article or news story or even write an entire story about you or your company, first be grateful; that’s assuming it’s a positive story. Crime Remains King While Positive PR Plays the Pawn in Detroit’s Comeback Swing

Strategically Speaking: A Blog by Denha Media Group It’s the Monday after the Grand Prix and just a couple of days following the Mackinac Policy Conference, and my morning scan of the media was a breaking news story that is a strong reminder that Detroit cannot escape it’s number one problem – crime. Crime will always over shadow any positive PR. It’s the old adage that if bleeds it leads and boy have we been bleeding. The first Twitter feed I read that morning was from Tom Jordan and WWJ: “Police investigate Triple Murder on City’s West Side.” [...]

Resolving To Communicate Ethically

Strategically Speaking: A Blog by Denha Media Group Why not resolve to communicate with ethics, integrity and honesty and surround yourself with people who do the same? Many professions, including the two I have spent my career in — Journalism and Public Relations — have codes of ethics. There is value in reminding yourself of these codes on a yearly or somewhat regular basis. If you have never read the code of ethics in your profession, it may be a good time to do so. In life, how we communicate is a reflection of who we are as professionals and [...]
